Cookin! At the Minetta Lane Theatre, 2/27/05

It is apparent to me that there is a reason why Korean culture is not known for its theatre. This show uses a few words of English, but predominantly it is a drumming show, like Stomp. What makes Cookin different from Stomp is that it uses cooking utensils and supplies as drums. There are funny bits, some cool acrobatics, and some neat moments in which food flies through the air. Plates are juggled, audience members are dragged onstage, chaos ensues. As a theatrical convention, I liked the fact that they did use real food, so that the smell of Korean BBQ permeated the audience. Smell is not used nearly enough in theatre. However, most of the food in the show ends up flying through the air and thrown on the floor, which made me sad, thinking of all the poor starving Korean children that would kill for some of that raw cabbage! Basically, this show is like ghetto, Korean Stomp. A highly stylized drumming ballet using knives. It would be great if I were a five year old Korean child, or an old person. In other words, a family show. I don’t really count it as theatre, as they didn’t even attempt to create a plot. Mildly entertaining at best.
